I'm a data nerd, a lifelong baseball fanatic, a husband (33 years and counting), a father of 3 grown daughters, a Methodist, a Texan (not native, but lived here all but 18 months of the past 40 years), and a credit union guy - 30 total years at 2 credit unions. I've managed IT departments, helped start a software development subsidiary, and built (with a lot of support) a Data Analytics department. As I type this (December 2021), I'm about 4 months away from retirement. Also, my default setting is the shy, retiring type, although I can play other roles. Thus, the name of this site, The Retiring Data Dude.

COVID Dispatches: Day 12

Posted on January 16, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Saturday, January 16, 2021 This is repeat info for some of you. Trying to capture everyone… I’m at Presbyterian Hospital in Plano in the ER area. They’re going to check me in so they can run a full screening and possibly chest X-rays. Linda is having to wait outside in her van. We’ll update when…

COVID Dispatches: Day 11

Posted on January 15, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Friday, January 15, 2021 Mostly positive day, although I have pretty much run a fever the whole day. I slept very little at all again last night. I was able to nap for a couple hours in a recliner, so that’s going to become my bed tonight. I’m praying that it does the trick. I…

COVID Dispatches: Day 10

Posted on January 14, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Thursday, January 14, 2021 Today was OK – not great, not bad. We tried sleeping in the same bed, with very mixed results for both of us. I got a couple hours of sleep in a slightly inclined position, but that didn’t work real well for breathing. I ended up sitting up – I have…

COVID Dispatches: Day 9

Posted on January 13, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Wednesday, January 13, 2021 Today was much better. While I barely slept at all (as some of you had predicted with my starting on the steroids), my fever broke a couple hours after last night’s dispatch. I was fever-free until late this afternoon. My temp topped out at 99.4, so nothing like yesterday. My pulse…

COVID Dispatches: Day 8

Posted on January 12, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Tuesday, January 12, 2021 Unless something changes, I won’t be including an update on Linda. She appears to be done with this. Today was a crap day. I felt rotten almost all day. The fatigue was gone, but I was nauseous. I started having a dry cough. My yoga breathing was more labored, like the…

COVID Dispatches: Day 7

Posted on January 11, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Monday, January 11, 2021 Linda is recovering quickly. She did some coughing this morning, but that was all. We both got a good night’s sleep. I had a stomach ache again this morning. It took a bit longer to get rid of it today. I also had a fever (still 100.2 at the highest) on…

COVID Dispatches: Day 6

Posted on January 10, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Sunday, January 10, 2021 Not so much to report today. We both slept better. I had a slight fever at bedtime, but it was gone by the time I got up for my first potty break of many. I had a 99.2 temperature a little while ago – this seems to be the daily pattern….

COVID Dispatches: Day 5

Posted on January 9, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Saturday, January 9, 2021 We’re feeling fine, well loved and cared for. The girls ordered a couple of deliveries for us: flowers and ice cream. Raychel went grocery shopping and dropped the bags off at our door. Kurt & Meghan brought over chicken noodle soup, a humidifier, and a birthday cake for Linda – very…

COVID Dispatches: Day 4

Posted on January 8, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Friday, January 8, 2021 If you’re thinking, “Hey, this is the first dispatch I’ve received, but it’s day 4”, this is the first dispatch. You haven’t missed anything. I started the count with the first day I had a fever, which was Tuesday. The bad news: Linda just received her results and she’s positive, too….

COVID Dispatches: Introduction

Posted on January 5, 2021December 19, 2021 by clayyearsley

Introduction On the evening of Tuesday, January 5th, 2021, I felt my first undeniable symptom of the Coronavirus. There were some that I successfully denied in the 2 days prior. I felt chills on my drive home from work. When I got home, I did, indeed, have a low-grade fever, 99.8 degrees. That fever broke…
